VEGMAP - A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT FOR A NEW VEGETATION MAP OF SOUTHERNAFRICA

The vegetation of southern Africa is well known and highly regarded fo r its floral wealth. Several maps of the vegetation have been publishe d this century but they have not been supported by adequate databases. This article describes a new initiative to create a national database of existing floristic information. The data will be analysed to provi de a classification of the vegetation which will then be used to produ ce an up-to-date vegetation map of southern Africa.
