The polarization behaviour of the output of a Ne Raman laser at 603.0
nm (2p(2) --> Is(4)) that is generated when a commercial internal-mirr
or helium-neon laser is pumped at 588.2 nm (Is(5) --> 2p(2)) is invest
igated experimentally. The dependence on pump laser detuning from atom
ic resonance and the cavity length are presented. Complex switching in
cluding polarization competition and oscillatory behaviour associated
with switch-on of the Raman lasing action is found.
