An investigation of birefringence in LiF:F-2 crystals photo-induced by
polarized second harmonic radiation of a YAG:Nd laser is presented. C
onsiderable birefringence is observed even in the frequency range wher
e there is no absorption. The interpretation of this effect based on t
he selective photoionization of F-2 centres by polarized pumping laser
radiation is proposed. This birefringence should be taken into consid
eration in he analysis of the operation of lasers and other optical de
vices containing axisymmetric colour centres.
