We report a detailed investigation of the dynamics of the hexatic-smec
tic-I to hexatic-smectic-F* phase transition in a chiral liquid-cryst
alline compound. The results show a dramatic softening of the relaxati
on frequency and an associated divergence of the susceptibility on app
roaching the transition. The temperature dependence of both these para
meters can be described by a power law with an exponent equal to 1, in
agreement with the theoretical predictions.
