Sj. Yiin et Th. Lin, EFFECTS OF METALLIC ANTIOXIDANTS ON CADMIUM-CATALYZED PEROXIDATION OFARACHIDONIC-ACID, Annals of clinical and laboratory science, 28(1), 1998, pp. 43-50
In the present study, the reaction mixtures (cadmium chloride with ara
chidonic acid) were preincubated at 37 degrees C for 24 h prior to the
measurement of malondialdehyde (MDA) by high performance liquid chrom
atography (HPLC). The cadmium-catalyzed reactions were also compared t
o those in the presence of selenium (Se), zinc (Zn) or germanium (Ge),
metallic antioxidants. Our results showed that the toxic effects of c
admium cause lipid peroxidation of arachidonic acid by the catalytic p
rocess. The addition of metallic antioxidants to the reaction mixtures
, might be useful in protecting against Cd-induced lipid peroxidation.
