Mp. Germano et al., EFFECTS OF PTELEOPSIS-SUBEROSA EXTRACTS ON EXPERIMENTAL GASTRIC-ULCERS AND HELICOBACTER-PYLORI GROWTH, Journal of ethnopharmacology, 59(3), 1998, pp. 167-172
Pteleopsis suberosa Engl. et Diels was used in the traditional medicin
e of Mall for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers. In an ethn
opharmacological approach, Pteleopsis suberosa extracts of the stem ba
rk were investigated for antiulcer and antibacterial activity against
Helicobacter pylori standard strains and clinical isolates. The decoct
ion, the traditional form of administration of the drug in Mall, and t
he methanolic extract were active against all the bacterial strains te
sted. The minimum inhibitory concentrations ranged from 62.5 to 500 mu
g/ml for the decoction and from 31.25 to 250 mu g/ml for the methanol
ic extract. The results indicate that Pteleopsis suberosa may be a sou
rce of compounds with a therapeutic potential against gastric ulcers a
ssociated with Helicobacter pylori infections. (C) 1998 Elsevier Scien
