The absorption spectrum of Fremy's salt, K-2[ON(SO3)(2)], in water sho
ws two bands at lambda(max) = 545 and 248 nm which are assigned to sig
ma(b) --> pi(n) and pi(n) --> sigma transitions, respectively. The ph
otolysis of Fremy's salt leads to a decomposition. It is assumed that
a homolytic cleavage of a N-S bond is the primary photochemical step.
