Abstract
We present near-IR spectroscopy of the hydrogen Paschen lines of a sam ple of X-ray selected Narrow Emission Line Galaxies (NELGs) - the fain test X-ray galaxies. The spectra were obtained in order to distinguish between AGN-like activity, where broad lines would be expected, and s tarburst activity (narrow lines). We find mostly narrow lines, but we do find some broad Paschen lines. We also see a correlation between th e line width and X-ray to optical luminosity ratio, L-X/L-opt, implyin g a mixture of starburst and AGN activity in each galaxy with a higher proportion of AGN activity for higher L-X/L-opt.
