An optically controlled transmit phased array was designed and a four-
element linear array was built using integrated optics for beamforming
and fiber optics for flexible remoting of the antenna, Electrooptic p
hase shifters remote from the antenna allowed simple electronic contro
l of beam pointing, This phased array transmitter operated at 10 GHz w
ith an effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) of 14 dBW, The radiat
ed power corresponded to approximately 0.4 W per element, The transmit
ted beam was electronically steered to any angle between -30 degrees a
nd 30 degrees in less than 5 mu s, The measured antenna patterns agree
d well with theory.
