We study defect states in two-and three-dimensional dielectric photoni
c crystals. We use the transfer-matrix method and we calculate the tra
nsmission and reflection coefficient of electromagnetic waves. The Q f
actor of the defect states increases exponentially with the thickness
of the photonic crystal. However, it saturates at high thickness when
absorption is introduced. The higher the absorption, the lower the sat
urated value of the Q factor. [S0163-1829(98)00907-2].
