Muon spin relaxation measurements of RE8Mg42Zn50 (RE = Gd, Tb) quasicr
ystals have revealed slower spin dynamics and more prompt spin freezin
g for Tb than Gd, due to ''crystalline electric field'' splitting in l
ow rare-earth site symmetry. Inhomogeneous spin freezing leads to a lo
w-temperature state with local field distribution characteristic of a
concentrated disordered magnet. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
