Ma. Abdelghaffar et al., A NOVEL SERIES OF CORROSION INHIBITIVE POLYMERS FOR STEEL PROTECTION, Journal of elastomers and plastics, 30(1), 1998, pp. 68-94
Poly(o-aminophenol), poly(o-aminothiophenol), poly(m-anisidine) and po
lyaniline have been prepared by chemical oxidation of their monomers u
sing ammonium persulfate at 0 degrees C. The polymers were characteriz
ed and their structures confirmed using elemental analysis and spectro
photometric measurements (FTIR, W-VIS, (HNMR)-H-1, MS, XRD and TC;A).
The polymers were evaluated as corrosion inhibitors for steel protecti
on by measuring their corrosion rates in comparison viith the previous
ly prepared polyaniline and the control sample. The polymers show a hi
gh performance as efficient corrosion inhibitors, and promising result
s were achieved when the polymers mere incorporated in various paint f
ormulations to replace a major part of the inhibitive pigments and to
replace the classical toxic corrosion inhibitors of low molecular weig
hts and low melting points. These results are very important from an e
conomic and safety points of view.
