D. Johns et Rr. Holden, DIFFERENTIATING SUICIDAL MOTIVATIONS AND MANIFESTATIONS IN A NONCLINICAL POPULATION, Canadian journal of behavioural science, 29(4), 1997, pp. 266-274
This research investigated the relationships among three indices of su
icidal behaviour (ideation, attempts, reported likelihood to commit) a
nd four predictors (depression, hopelessness, motivations based on int
ernal perturbations, extrapunitive/manipulative motivations). Using 26
2 nonclinical participants, three key findings emerged. First, not all
indices of suicidal behaviour were equivalent. Second, hopelessness a
nd motivations based on internal perturbations were consistently the s
ignificant, nonredundant predictors of the various suicide indices. Th
ird, two underlying dimensions explained the relationships among varia
bles: Negative Cognitions, and Action Orientation. implications of the
se finding are discussed.
