D. Bennett et G. Parry, THE ACCURACY OF REFORMULATION IN COGNITIVE ANALYTIC THERAPY - A VALIDATION-STUDY, Psychotherapy research, 8(1), 1998, pp. 84-103
The Self States Sequential Diagram (SSSD) is a tool developed by Ryle
(Ryle, 1990, Beard, Marlowe & Ryle, 1990) as part of the technique of
reformulation in cognitive analytic therapy. Patient and therapist col
laborate to describe the patient's problematic patterns of relating to
others and the self and use the resulting diagram to aid recognition
and revision-of these patterns in the patient's everyday life and with
in the therapeutic relationship. We report on the accuracy of this dia
grammatic description by validating one patient's SSSD using the Core
Conflictual Relationship Theme Method (CCRT; Luborsky &: Crits-Christo
ph 1990) and Structural Analysis of Social Behaviour-Cyclic Maladaptiv
e Pattern (SASB-CMP; Benjamin, 1974, 1987; Benjamin, Foster, Roberto &
Estroff, 1986; Schacht & Henry, 1994). This comparison supports the v
iew that it is possible for the therapist to create a descriptive diag
ram which is a valid representation of recurrent relationship patterns
.
