TURKEYS PLACE IN SOCIAL-SCIENCE PUBLICATI ONS IN THE WORLD

This paper reviews the publication (articles, notes, book reviews, etc .) of Turkish social scientists as reported in the Social Sciences Cit ation Index (SSCI) by checking the authors' affiliation addresses to s ee if they included the word ''Turkey''. Altogether, a total of 887 pu blications were identified between 1985 and 1996. The number of public ations in 1996 is 166, which constitutes 0.14% of the total number of publications in the world. Three fourths of the publications were of f ull-text articles. An overwhelming majority of the contributions (95%) were written in English. Most contributions (93%) came from researche rs working at universities. Researchers affiliated with Middle East Te chnical, Bosporus and Bilkent Universities made more than half (%53) o f all social science publications.
