Poststructuralist analyses of social phenomena are not new. They do, h
owever, provide a critique of previous approaches to the study of leis
ure that deconstructs former projects. This paper is an attempt to rec
onstruct the study of leisure by suggesting 1) elements of the poststr
ucturalist critique, 2) an introduction to the basis of a phenomenolog
ical framework, and 3) an outline of elements in such an agenda for le
isure theory and research. These elements include a dialectic of socia
l and existential metaphors in a context of change.
