F. Villeneuve et al., SITE LOCATION AND OPEN COMMUNICATIONS ARE THE KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL LANDFILL PERMITTING - HOW ONE COMPANY HANDLED ITS EXPANSION NEEDS, Pulp & paper Canada, 99(2), 1998, pp. 29
This paper describes Stone-Consolidated's approach to site selection a
nd permitting of a new landfill for its three mills in the Quebec St-M
aurice Valley. All potential sites within a relatively large area were
initially identified. The number of potential sites was subsequently
reduced to six using known exclusion techniques and preliminary invest
igations. Upon identification of the optimal site, informal discussion
s began with local authorities. These discussions evolved into a compr
ehensive communication campaign which was instrumental in gaining unan
imous support for the project.
