The past year has seen significant advances in the cross-national comp
arative epidemiology of schizophrenia, and affective, anxiety and soma
toform disorders. Ethnographic, historic and epidemiologic work has re
fined our notions of culture-related syndromes and idioms of distress.
The cultural assessment and formulation outlined in the DSM-IV is dev
eloping into a basic clinical tool for work in multicultural settings.
