Psychiatry in the third world is at the early stages of understanding
the nature and consequences of mental disorders. There is gradual deve
lopment of organised ways of providing mental health care. The studies
reviewed show both commonalities with western psychiatry and differen
ces. Growing knowledge has the potential to enrich world psychiatry as
we understand community resources as a potential for mental health pr
