An automated method for the determination of mercury (II) with chemilu
minescent detection is proposed. The system is based on the inhibitory
action of mercury on enzymic activity of alcohol oxidase. When alcoho
l oxidase is in presence of mercury, its activity decreseases; this ca
uses a decrease of hydrogen peroxide production, which is monitored by
the luminol chemiluminescence and correlated to the concentration of
mercury in the solution. The determination range was 10-100 ppm, and t
he throughput was 24 samples/hour.
