House dust mites are often responsible for allergic manifestations, es
sentially respiratory. However, the drug treatment of these allergies
is not sufficient and must always be associated with elimination of ho
use dust mites. Many methods are available to physicians and the gener
al public. Some can be dangerous, such as humidifiers, and most of the
m have not been demonstrated to be effective, or have not been evaluat
ed by clinical trials. Which methods should be recommended to patients
? A review of the literature showed that prevention must be global: an
isolated measure is often illusory. Among the really effective method
s, the use of polyurethane dust covers associated with hygiene measure
s such as aeration during cold, dry weather, and frequent cleaning wit
h washing of bedclothes at 60 degrees C, appear to constitute the most
satisfactory solution, with minimal constraints, a good longevity/cos
t ratio, and proven efficacy on a reduction of clinical symptoms. Thes
e measures can be as recommended to high-risk patients, in order to pr
event or delay appearance of the disease.
