Abstract
A finite element model of dendritic solidification of multicomponent a lloys is presented that includes solutal convection and is an extensio n of a previously developed model for solidification of binary alloys. The model is applied to simulation of the solidification of ternary a nd quaternary Ni-based alloys. The role of solutal convection in the m acrosegregation and the formation of freckles is analysed. Calculation s show the effects of geometry and material properties on the convecti on patterns and the attendant segregation. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
