In recent years a great amount of different ion-sensing layers for opt
ical sensors have been studied and developed. In all cases the optical
signal is generated upon interaction of this layer with the analyte.
The paper presents general principles in a design of the optical ion-s
ensing layer so-called chemooptical interface - a receptor part of the
fiber optic chemical sensors (FOGS). Several methods of reagent immob
ilization in different types of sensing layers: surface and bulk membr
anes are described. The mechanism of the ion-recognition by reagent mo
lecules and different mechanisms of the signal processing are discusse
d.
