Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), first described in 1966, remains an
issue of both clinical and public health importance. BPD may be associ
ated with chronic respiratory difficulties, prolonged and recurrent ho
spitalization, an increased incidence of neurodevelopmental disabiliti
es, growth restriction, and death. Controversies regarding the cause o
f BPD are important to resolve in an attempt to develop strategies for
prevention.
