Abstract
The dependence of the voltage of a stable plasma are on the current, a re length and pressure has been fitted to experimental data with the a re operating in positive and negative resistance modes. A general just ification for this behaviour is provided together with the operating d omain over which negative resistance behaviour can be observed. A simp lified mathematical model is provided to describe the negative resista nce mode of operation of the are neglecting conduction and radiation h eat losses but retaining axial convection.
