In this paper, we present the results of our work to design and evalua
te relevance filtering schemes for distributed interactive simulation
(DIS) systems. Relevance filtering is a technique that can effectively
reduce the traffic on long-haul links of simulation networks and impr
ove the scalability of DIS systems. Detailed algorithms suitable for t
he implementation of distributed data filtering in the gateways of DIS
networks are presented. Both filtering-at-transmission and filtering-
at-reception are explained. Methods to solve the problem of inaccurate
state information caused by the distributed nature of data filtering
are presented and evaluated.
