This paper focuses on the second half of the twentieth century, when t
he need for adequate models to understand transport/land-use interacti
ons has become important because of the twin problems of traffic conge
stion and pressures for land development. The author traces the develo
pment and use of various types of models to achieve this, examines the
enabling technologies and their applications, and gives pointers for
their future use.
