We describe the case of a 73-year-old patient with gastric adenocarcin
oma composed of histologically well differentiated glandular areas, ex
tensive rhabdoid zones and regions depicting a transition between thes
e two constituents. The rhabdoid component showed typical features suc
h as abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, eccentric nuclei, prominent nucl
eoli, intense positive immunohistochemical cytoplasmic reaction for vi
mentin and less evident immunohistochemical for cytokeratin and epithe
lial membrane antigen (EMA). Our findings strongly suggest that the rh
abdoid areas probably represent a phenotypic variant of a gastric aden
ocarcinoma, otherwise fairly well differentiated, a combination that t
o the best of our knowledge has not been previously reported.
