Raman spectra and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are examined
in ferroelectric liquid crystal D-4-(2-methylbutoxy) phenyl 4-decylox
ybenzoate(MBOPDOB) at various temperatures. On heating we observed two
sets of Raman lines (1166 and 1730 cm(-1), and 1178 and 1710 cm(-1))
which are related to S-cis and S-trans conformations of COO group, res
pectively. During the cooling process, we find another kind of the COO
stretch line with a new line-shape. DSC an low frequency Raman scatte
ring measurements show that a new phase appears between the Sm C and
solid phases.
