Single crystals of Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O-3-PbTiO3 (PNN-PT) perovskites were
grown from the PbO-B2O3 flux by a slow cooling technique. For obtainin
g the PNN crystals in several mm size without the formation of pyrochl
ore phase, the starting compositions adopted was 10-12PbO+1.1NiO+Nb2O5
+B2O3. The crystals of two different solid solutions, 0.8PNN-0.2PT and
0.7PNN-0.3PT, were grown by modifying these compositions with PT comp
osition. The grown crystals showed dielectric constant-temperature cur
ves with a broad peak due to the diffuse phase transition. Typical beh
avior of a relaxer was observed in the crystals, as the dielectric con
stant maximum decreases and the dielectric constant maximum temperatur
e increases with increasing the measuring frequency. The relaxer behav
ior, however, became weak with increasing of PT content. The 0.7PNN-0.
3PT crystal showed a high electromechanical property.
