Scintillation properties of Lu2S3:Ce3+ crystals are presented, The stu
died crystals of similar to 1 x 1 x 1 mm(3) have the corundum structur
e (density 6.25 g/cm(3), effective atomic number 66.8). The linear att
enuation length or a 511 keV photon is 1.35 rm. The light yield is 75
000-30 000 photons per MeV and the decay lime is rather short, i.e. 32
ns. The emission spectrum is between 550 and 700 nm. peaking at 592 n
m. Consequently the scintillation light can be efficiently detected by
means of silicon diodes, (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
