The present study deals with the design of in-series biofilm reactors
with equal volumes and outlines - a computationally more efficient pro
cedure which results in an accurate and optimum design with minimum to
tal volume requirement for the given number of reactors to achieve the
desired degree of treatment. The suggested approach is based on the m
echanistic biofilm model instead of empirical one. Using a few reporte
d sets of kinetic parameters, it is shown that the proposed algorithm
can be successfully exploited for the design purposes. (C) 1998 Elsevi
