A patient with coexistent Reiter's syndrome (RS) and tophaceous gout i
s described. The association of these two rheumatic diseases has not b
een previously reported. The reason for the rare association between g
out and RS is unclear but possible explanations are reviewed. The diag
nosis of gout should be considered in patients with RS who experience
acute monoarticular or pauciarticular arthritis and characteristic cut
aneous nodules.
