Abstract
This study uses data from the 1988 and 1993 NCES national surveys of f aculty to examine what has happened to the earnings of women in higher education. The data show that the aggregate unexplained wage gap betw een men and women is between 7 and 10%, which is comparable to finding s from earlier national studies conducted during the 1970s and 1980s. Perhaps the most important finding in the study is that the unexplaine d wage gap for younger women is much lower than for older women in aca deme. The results of the analysis suggest that some progress is being made with regard to the relative earnings of men and women in academe, despite the lack of movement in the aggregate level of pay disparity.
