The hierarchical technical organization of the past is giving way to t
he immediate technical needs of the individual business units. Rs busi
ness teams become the dominant structure in today's corporation, manag
ement must have a strategy to maintain the technical excellence inhere
nt in the former technology organization. Although the importance of t
hese values may not be immediately apparent to the non-technical leade
rship of the specific business groups, there could be serious long-ter
m consequences should these values be compromised. For this reason, Ol
in's Chemicals Research Center has taken steps to ensure the maintenan
ce of technical excellence and scientific values in a restructured env
ironment.
