Abstract
This paper analyzes the harmonic voltages and currents in a distributi on feeder with uniformly distributed linear and nonlinear loads. Two m ajor topics are addressed: 1. The determination of the maximum tolerab le nonlinear load apparent power in the feeder, with and without shunt capacitance, that can produce 5% total harmonic distortion of the vol tage (VTHD); 2. The second subject deals with shunt LC filter optimiza tion. The goal is to determine the best tuning frequency and location of the filter which minimizes the maximum VTHD in the feeder. Also, th e effect of the triple harmonics trapping transformer, grounded-wye/de lta transformer (GWDT), is discussed. The installation of the LC filte r and GWDT at the capacitor bank location, at 2/3 of the feeder length , which minimizes the 60 Hz power loss, is considered. To make the res ults of this study more useful, it is attempted to provide basic guide lines for the best location and the size of the LC filter and GWDT for any distribution feeder.
