Abstract
Data on the life-time residential histories of 16,091 individuals born 1750-1930 are used to examine the relative importance of movement up and down the urban hierarchy. Although movement to larger towns exceed ed counterurbanization until the 1880's, there was a substantial amoun t of movement down the urban hierarchy from at least the mid-eighteent h century.
