Magnetoelastic properties of a single crystal of CeP have been investi
gated by magnetostriction and thermal expansion measurements. The long
itudinal magnetostriction at 4.2 K shows an abrupt decrease in length
around 0.5 T with a large hysteresis in the virgin cycle. Moreover, is
o-field thermal expansion shows a large increase of the length at the
temperature where the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition takes plac
e. Such large length changes can be understood by the p-f mixing effec
t which has been used successfully to explain the magnetic phase diagr
am of CeP. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
