S = 2 quantum antiferromagnetic chains described by XXZ Heisenberg Ham
iltonian with uniaxial anisotropy has been studied using DMRG techniqu
e. Chains of length tip to 92 have been considered keeping 50 most sig
nificant states in the density matrix. Variation of the ground-state e
nergy and Haldane gap with anisotropy parameters is reported. (C) 1998
