Abstract
The unique singlet ground state of an S = 1 one-dimensional antiferrom agnet is studied using ESR measurements on NENP, Ni(C2H8N2)(2)NO2(ClO4 ) doped with nonmagnetic Zn2+ impurities. A new interpretation is prop osed to analyze angle-dependent ESR spectra by introducing a model in which the observed signals are due to the S = 1/2 broken valence bond subjected to the field-induced staggered internal fields possibly orig inating from the underlying antiferromagnetic polarization.
