HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING IN INDUSTRY

In 1993, a list of the top 500 supercomputer sites world,vide was made available for the first time. Since then, the TOP500 list has been pu blished twice a year. The list allows a detailed and well-founded anal ysis of the state of highperformance computing (HPC). This article sum marizes the recent trends in application areas of HPC systems, focusin g on the increase in industrial installations and applications. A deta iled analysis with respect to the geographical distribution, the marke t share of manufacturers and the architectures used for different appl ication areas is presented.
