Abstract
Strontium-89 standards have been prepared for use in calibrating instr uments in the measurement chain from production in reactors to adminis tration in the clinic or radiopharmacy. Alternate reactor production s chemes were evaluated to yield high purity Sr-89 with minimum Sr-85 im purity. Following purification to remove radionuclidic impurities, sam ples of Sr-89 were standardized by high-efficiency liquid-scintillatio n counting with a relative expanded uncertainty (intended to approxima te two standard deviations) of 0.48%. A Standard Reference Material, S RM 4426A, was prepared and distributed to radiopharmaceutical manufact urers and other customers. The standard sources of Sr-89 were used ind ifferent geometries to calibrate high purity Ge semiconductor detector s, re-entrant ionization chambers and commercial radionuclide calibrat ors. The latter included Capintec dose calibrators and the Capintec be ta eta C(TM) NaI(Tl) scintillation counter. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Ali rights reserved.
