P. Gangaiya et Rj. Morrison, THE POTASSIUM STATUS OF SOME PACIFIC ISLAND SOILS, Communications in soil science and plant analysis, 29(1-2), 1998, pp. 179-192
The potassium (K) status of 22 soil samples from 12 pedons originating
in 6 Pacific Island countries has been investigated by several techni
ques. The total K contents of the soils studied were found to be low t
o very low. Use of various methods available for measuring exchangeabl
e cations in soils showed exchangeable K to be dependent on factors su
ch as ionic strength and displacement cation of the extracting solutio
n. The proportions of nonexchangeable K that are plant available were
found to be very low for most soils. Data obtained from quantity/inten
sity measurements suggest that the soils would be responsive to added
K.
