Measurements of spin waves in La1-xCaxMnO3, x = 0.08, T = 14 K, are re
ported and compared to x = 0.05. Two spin-wave branches are observed,
one showing the characteristics expected for Mn spins coupled by excha
nge (strongly anisotropic), the other for hin spins coupled through ho
le hopping (isotropic, with a quadratic law omega = Dq(2) + Delta at s
mall q). Both spin-wave branches evolve with x. These two types of exc
itations are separated by an energy band which does not vary with x. (
