The magnetic viscosity parameter, S, within the recoil curves and on t
he major hysteresis loop of NiO/Ni nanocomposites were measured. On th
e major hysteresis loop S is negative and constant in time, while with
in the recoil curves S is initially positive before going through zero
and becoming negative. This is modelled using a Markov chain which de
scribes the occupation of the branches of a set of hysterons. (C) 1998
