The Mott-Smith method is used to solve the kinetic problem on strong e
vaporation of a polyatomic gas from a flat surface into proper vapor.
Allowance is made for the contribution from the internal degrees of fr
eedom to the total specific heat of gas. Analytical expressions are ob
tained for the temperature and concentration of mono-, bi-, and triato
mic gases in the region of flow formation. The structure of Knudsen la
yer is investigated. A considerable effect of molecular excitation on
the temperature of evaporating gas is shown.
