The nitrogen stress which can be elicited experimentally in fir and sp
ruce is to be attributed to ammonium. Nitrate alone, even 15 mM, has n
o effect. The threshold concentration lies between 2 mM and 5 mM ammon
ium. These concentrations may occur at sites with high deposition rate
s. Fir responds much more sensitive than spruce. In case of spruce on
optimum supply with potassiums damps the stress symptoms.
