Abstract
The bacteria, Citrobacter, Klebsiella, Yersinia and Serratia were isol ated from sewage and growth conditions were standarized for each bacte rium. Microbial mixture was formulated by mixing equal concentration b ased on optical density of each of the bacterium. The Chemical Oxygen Demand (GOD) of industrial effluents was determined. The Biochemical O xygen Demand (BOD) of industrial effluents was estimated by using the formulated microbial mixture as a seeding material. Biodegradable frac tion of organic matter (Fb) and BOD/COD ratio of industrial samples we re determined. BOD/COD ratio and Fb indicate that these values are com parable for both formulated microbial mixture as well as sewage. Based on the above study, it can be concluded that sewage may be replaced b y formulated microbial mixture for the determination of biodegradable oranic matter.
