Il. Mitroff, ON THE FUNDAMENTAL IMPORTANCE OF ETHICAL MANAGEMENT - WHY MANAGEMENT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL HUMAN ACTIVITIES, Journal of management inquiry, 7(1), 1998, pp. 68-79
Management is the most fundamental of all human activities. This artic
le argues for a new conception of management known as ethical manageme
nt (EM). EM leads to a different conception of truth, one that is root
ed fundamentally in ethical actions. Because most problems of any impo
rtance contain significant barriers to the implementation of actions d
esigned to remove the problems, EM is concerned with the discovery, in
vention, and adaptation of systems of management that attempt to overc
ome the barriers to ethical actions. One such system is the 22 steps o
f Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Spirituality not only plays a highly impo
rtant role in AA but more generally in EM. Spirituality may in fact be
the most important component of all management systems.
