Abstract
Multicasting is an important Feature for any switching network being i ntended to support broadband integrated services digital networks (B-I SDN). This paper proposes an improved multicast packet switch based on Lee's nonblocking copy network [1]. The improved design retains the d esirable features of Lees network including its nonblocking property w hile adopting techniques to overcome the various limitations mentioned in various literature. The proposed network architecture utilizes d-d ilated banyan networks to increase the amount of cells that can be rep licated within the copy network. Cell splitting is used to optimize th e utilization of the networks available bandwidth. Furthermore. the pr oposed architecture allows for the modular expansion in capacity to ac comodate changing traffic patterns. the modular design of the proposed switch likewise offers easy handling and replacement of faulty module s.
